THE OXFORD MEDICAL LECTURE CLUB
The Oxford Medical Lecture Club (OMLC) meets monthly to hear and discuss a wide variety of talks to Oxford Medical Alumni, other Medics with an Oxford connection and related health care professionals including those teaching future clinical students in Oxford, and even some of the latter.
A small Committee of OMLC supports the ongoing lecture series together they discuss and approach potential lecturers.
The Club supports ten lectures each year on medical or medically related themes in a setting that can accommodate a minimum of 70 people. We offer light refreshments prior to the lecture which provides an opportunity for socialising and catching up with former colleagues and friends. For members who cannot attend the meeting it is streamed live on Zoom and with the permission of the Speakers is recorded and posted on the Lecture club website for later viewing.
The lectures are mainly held at St Hugh’s College, Oxford. One member of the Committee liaises with the speaker to ensure their needs are met. A Committee member introduces each speaker and conducts the Q & A session.
The OMLC Treasurer, along with other Committee members who are available, will serve as hosts of the event, greeting arrivals and directing participants towards the refreshments.
Each OMLC member may introduce one or two guests per meeting, but such persons cannot again be the guest of the same member. Guests are encouraged to become members.
OMLC is a subscription-based club which are managed by the Treasurer. Fees are due annually in September and are currently £40 for those members attending in person or on Zoom, and £20 for those who only wish to attend only on Zoom.
Subscriptions cover the cost of our Zoom account, refreshments, a payment to the College for the preparation etc of the lecture hall, plus an honorarium in the form of a book token, for the speaker.
The annual subscription are paid into a OMLC community benefit bank account, administered by the OMLC Treasurer under the auspices of the OMLC Committee.
If subscriptions exceed the costs of running the lectures the Committee will discuss how such surplus would be best distributed. Recent donations have been made to support the Mature Medical Students Hardship Fund.
Currently the members of the OMLC Committee are:
Chairman: Andy Molyneux
Secretary: John Morris
Treasurer: Rosalind Nicholas
Committee Members: John Stein, Lyn Williamson and Shelley Hayles
